Design and Technology at Laira Green involves lots of practical lessons where the children get hands on learning opportunities. The children enjoy these activities and learning is further enhanced by linking to other curriculum subjects. The children have opportunities to cook throughout the year in school while learning about healthy eating and nutritional meals.
Here are the links to the curriculum overviews for each year group for D&T:
In Y3/4 the children made chariots as part of their topic work on the Roman Empire. Here are some photos of their design and evalutation work (photos of chariots to follow).
In Year 1 the children learnt about structures in our local area and how they were constructed. We walked around the school grounds and identified the different structures we could find. The children looked at the different materials that were used in the construction of the school building and linked this to our science learning of materials this term. The children used this learning to make their own shelter for a Lego man using wooden sticks, paper and cling film. We tested the structures to see if they were water and wind proof with interesting results. The children then adapted their shelters to improve the design and functionality.
