Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to Laira Green. We hope you had a great summer holiday. It is lovely to see the children fresh and ready for a new term! We hope the following information will be useful as the new year begins.
Our Team: Mr Bright is teaching Maple class this year. All the children in Maple class are Year 3. Oak and Apple are mixed Year 3 and 4 classes. Mrs Ford and Mrs Hughes are teaching Apple class. Mrs Hunter and Mrs Larsen will be teaching Oak. However, as stated in the headteacher’s welcome letter, Mrs Ellis will be covering for Mrs Hunter until she is well enough to return.
The teachers are ably supported by an excellent team of teaching assistants:
Miss Hanna, Mrs Dulling, Mrs Walker and Miss Frost.
Wet Mornings: Please note that due to safeguarding, every child should enter the school by the rear doors, even on a wet morning. These will be opened promptly at 8.30am. No child will be allowed through the front doors without prior arrangement.
PE: This year, in addition to PE lessons, the children will continue to be taught by the team from Plymouth Argyle.
PE will take place on the following days. Please make sure your child’s PE kit is in school all week and is taken home only on a Friday if it needs a wash. This allows for some flexibility as the year goes on.
|Maple||Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday|
|Apple||Tuesday, Thursday and Friday|
|Oak||Tuesday, Thursday and Friday|
PE kit consists of a white top and black or white shorts. During colder weather, the
children may choose to wear plain black jogging bottoms and a plain black jumper. We encourage warm PE kit for the winter months as we will take some of our PE lessons outside.
Reading: If your child reads every day at home, they will make good progress at school. This may be independent reading or shared reading with family members – either option requires a parent/carer signature in the child’s reading record.
To get the most out of reading please encourage your child to choose books that interest them. Talk about what they have read with them. Encourage them to keep practising.
We will be monitoring this and rewarding those who consistently meet or exceed expectations. Children will also complete a comprehension quiz on every book they finish.
Spellings: Each week, your child will be tested on a set of ten spellings. They will also be tested on a further five spellings taken from words they have learned and been tested on already. This is so that they learn the spellings of new words as well as recalling spellings they have learned already. Spelling lists are sent home each term and are also found on the website.
Practising these spellings at home will help your child to do well in the tests.
Projects: At the beginning of term 1, 3 and 5 your child will bring home a topic booklet. This will detail all the learning we will be covering that term. In this booklet we include creative ideas to encourage your child to respond to what they are learning about in lessons. These challenges are not compulsory but we would love to find out about any learning your child is doing at home.
We are very excited to be working with the wonderful children in Years 3 and 4 and we are determined that they will enjoy great success. We welcome any questions and information from parents so please feel free to make an appointment if you wish to speak with your child’s teacher.
Meet the teacher
We would be delighted to meet with you and answer any questions you may have at our meet the teacher event.
This will take place at 3:15 on Tuesday 12th September for Apple and Wednesday 13th of September for Maple and Oak in the classroom.
