Birch class has recently been learning about the Futurism art movement. The children learnt that key words associated with this movement are: speed & movement, energy, aggression, force lines, crowds, urban, new technology, progress, weapons & Fascism. The movement began in Italy in 1909, led by Marinetti.
We studied ‘The Speeding Car’ by Giacomo Balla and described our reactions to it. Then we explored mark-making whilst listening to a medley from Holst’s ‘The Planets’ where the tempo, rhythm and dynamics changed regularly.
To further explore the sense of movement that Futurist artists wanted to capture, the children captured their own movements using photography.
They then explored drawing using crayons and oil pastels to produce their own Futurist art.
