As part of their Earth and Space learning, Birch class has been investigating the relative sizes of the planets in our solar system. We learnt that if the Sun was the size of a basketball, the Earth would be the size of a pea and our moon would be the size of a peppercorn. We also investigated their relative distances from each other.
Then, we used fruit and vegetables to represent the relative sizes of all of the planets: Mercury was a peppercorn; Venus a small pickled onion; Earth a cherry tomato; Mars a pea; Jupiter a watermelon; Saturn a large grapefruit; Uranus an apple and Neptune a lime.
After that, we ate Jupiter! … Well, it was Healthy Eating week too!
