Welcome to year 5/4! We are pleased to be welcoming your child into our class. We hope that this guide will help to prepare your child for a happy start.
THE TEAM – The class will be taught by Miss Scott. Our class TA is Mrs McGahan.
The start and the end of the day.
8.30am – There will be a teacher on duty in the playground from 8.30. The bell rings at 8.40, when we will come out to greet the children and take them into school at 8.45. Please ensure that your child arrives at school on time.
3pm – School lessons finish at 3pm and we will escort the children to the playground shortly after. Remember to sign your children up for some of the great clubs on offer after school and at lunch time. (Ask at the school office for more details).
The children will continue to bring reading books home which they have chosen as part of the Renaissance Reading Programme. We would like to encourage you to listen to your child read and discuss what they have read. We suggest 10-15 minutes, five times a week. Please use the reading log to let us know that you have heard your child read and to make any relevant comments. The children will complete quizzes relating to the books they have read and it is therefore important to have a good understanding of the language, style and vocabulary used in the books.
We encourage children to keep hydrated in school. Please ensure that your child has a plastic, see through bottle to refill with water each day, which can be kept on the side shelf in the classroom. It needs to be clearly marked with your child’s name. Bottles can be bought at the school office for a small fee.
PE kits need to be in school all week and consist of a white t-shirt, white shorts and trainers or plimsolls. Black leotards are a suitable alternative for girls. In colder weather, black tracksuit bottoms are also allowed to be worn. Please ensure that all kit is clearly labelled so that we can quickly match lost clothing to their owners! May we also remind you that children are expected to have school shoes, not trainers, as part of their school uniform.
Homework will be set every Friday and collected in on the following Thursday. It will usually be a piece of maths or English, but may on occasion be some topic based work. The work will be linked to work covered in class and will help your child to consolidate his/her learning. The children will also continue to bring home their Learning Logs to complete on a weekly basis.
Spellings will also be set every week. These will be taught in school, but we hope that you will be able to find time to help your children learn these spellings at home. The spellings will be tested every Monday. Children will be given a sheet with space to practice at home which should be returned to Mr Hutchinson on the day of the test.
Food and Photos!!
As part of school life we like to take photos of the children to use in the school newsletter or to display in and around the classroom to celebrate their learning. The children may also be involved in food tasting during the year for which we require your permission. We would be grateful if you could complete the permission slip attached to this letter and return it to us as soon as possible.
There will be the opportunity for you to come in for an informal ‘meet the teacher’ on Wednesday 14th September after school. If you have any other queries please feel free to arrange to come and see us. After school is usually best.
