Your child will need to arrive in school on the specified mornings wearing the appropriate clothing (details below) but wearing their school shoes/bring their boots in a bag. Chestnut class’s dates are:

Forest School

Forest school is a Danish concept that relies on learning by experience.  Specialist Forest School Practitioners focus on the personal development and individual learning styles of the children, providing them with a good environment in which to learn and achieve, helping them to build their self-esteem, social skills and independence. Forest school programmes can last anywhere up to 36 weeks. Each programme is tailored to meet the individual needs of the participants taking into account their stage of development and learning styles and is, as far as possible, child led, to capitalise on their interests and to promote a sense of ownership. Forest school activities develop practical and intellectual skills which can all be linked to the National Curriculum and early learning goals of the foundation stage curriculum.

Each session combines woodland activities with team building games and builds upon and extends the skills learnt in previous sessions. These activities range from identifying things within nature, making shelters, tying knots and using tools (such as knives, saws and drills). The children are set up for a successful experience building their self-esteem, leading to greater self-confidence. Activities are broken down into small achievable steps.  Each step celebrates the child’s success. School staff will accompany the children at all times. Laira Green Forest School is led by James Blake (a Foundation Teacher and Level 3 Forest School Practitioner) and Jason McMillan (Director of the Allotment Project and a Level 3 Forest School Practitioner).

The Forest School sessions will take place in Efford Valley, a short walk from the school and as it will take place in all weathers, it is important you ensure that your child is adequately clothed. Here is a suggested seasonal/weather appropriate kit list:

Warm clothing that is allowed to get dirty,

Wellies/old trainers/other sturdy outdoors footwear (wellies or waterproof footwear preferable),

Waterproof coat,

Waterproof trousers if you have any,

Please dress the children in long trousers and long sleeved tops, there should be no bare legs or open toe sandals please.
