For the first half term of the Spring Mr Blake and Jason are taking a small group of year four children in to Efford Valley to do some continuous Forest School work, ably assisted by the lovely Mr Hartley. This is to help the staff complete their training and will hopefully impact on the Forest School provision for the rest of the children at Laira Green; making it a more enriching experience, providing lifelong learning, boosting confidence and also self-esteem.
The children are learning to manage their own risks within the woodland and are becoming familiar with the species of trees which are planted there and how we can use the different species for certain tasks. We are learning how the council and the Friends of Efford Valley will be managing the site and how this will positively benefit the community.
As the weeks progress we will be using tools, including learning the correct way to handle knives to create things from the woodland for a purpose. We will hopefully be able to have many discussions with them about the safe use of fire, its purpose within a Forest School situation and how to remove all trace of it when we are finished.
Two weeks into the term, with four to go, we are certainly having fun and I hope the children are too!
