Summer is here!
We hope that you all had a good Easter holiday and haven’t eaten too much chocolate!
Once again, we have a lot to do over the next two terms and the children will be involved in some exciting projects, including a Jubilee project celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and a 6 week project celebrating the Olympic Games and its values.
We will continue to set homework every Friday, which will be collected in on the following Thursday. Please ensure that your child completes and returns their homework. It is a really useful way of revisiting learning and sharing with you what we have covered in class.
Please continue to read with your child at home. This is such a valuable activity and will help him/her to make huge progress in their understanding of language. We suggest 10-15 minutes, three times a week. Please use the reading record to let us know that you have heard your child read and to make any relevant comments.

We are continuing the learn to play the Ocarina as part of the ‘Government’s Wider Opportunities’ in Music scheme. Most of us have now completed level 1 on the Ocarina and are now working towards our level 2. We are also looking at Nepal in Term 3 and composing our own pieces of music . We have started off by listening to children in Kathmandu singing a playground chant and then writing our own. We have worked with a partner to record these on to a CD.

Welcome back!
Happy New Year! We hope that you all had a good holiday and are ready for the new term. We have had a good first week with the class and are very pleased with the way in which the children have settled back into class and into work! We have a lot to do over the next few terms and the children will be involved in some exciting projects, including an international project on Nepal and a 6 week project celebrating the 100 years since the explorer Scott travelled to Antarctica.

Year 3 were joined by Katie Lake, an artist who works with metal , who showed them how to make 3D models out of pipe cleaners. Katie took three of these models and transformed them into metal sculptures which were displayed at the National Marine Aquarium. Here are some photographs of our day with Katie. You can see the concentration on the faces of the children as they make their wire fish.

…and here are the finished fish!
Class 3BR were visited by Sneferu the Egyptian priest. Sneferu showed us how to play Sennet and he explained all the gory details about mummification and the afterlife.
After lunch we had a good look at the 3D burial chamber of King Tutankhamun. There were many hidden treasures inside which the children were able to pick up and investigate.
The photos also show the children dressing up in Egyptian robes and dresses.

Year 3 paid a visit to the Eden Project in November. We were very lucky as the Eden Project was flooded the next day after a very big storm!
In school, the children have been learning about the animals and plants that live in the rainforest and were very excited about their trip to the tropical biome.
We saw many edible plants including rice, mangoes, papayas, star fruit and pineapples. One of the more unusual plants was the cola plant which is used to make Coca Cola! The children learnt that almost everything we eat comes from plants. Including coffee, chocolate, sago and even fizzy drinks!
In October Year 3 were treated to a visit from Septimus the Roman Soldier. The visit supported the children’s learning of our topic ‘The Roman Invasion of Britain’.
Septimus taught the children all about life in Roman times, especially life in the army! He brought along many artefacts including ceramic bowls, various pieces of art and everyday tools that were used 2000 years ago when the Romans invaded Britain.
The class enjoyed learning about the objects and guessing what they were used for before making detailed drawings of their favourite item. They also tried on Roman helmets and body armour. Next term Septimus will be returning for the second part of his visit when the children will be learning maths using Roman numerals!
